The fifteenth precept: spreading saṃgha property in a covered place. Five conditions: first, it is saṃgha property; second, it is in a sheltered place; third, spreading it oneself or having someone else do so; fourth, neither gathering it up oneself nor instructing someone to gather it up; fifth, crossing the boundary or exceeding three nights, whereupon one incurs the offense. In the Vinaya, one should speak to a resident bhikṣu, saying: 'Securely store it for me.' If there is no one and there is no fear of loss, one should move the bed away from the wall, prop up the bedposts high, take the pillows, quilts, and bedding and place them inside, and cover them repeatedly with other coarse items. If one fears decay, one should take the bedding, place it on a clothes rack, stand the bed upright, and depart. If one does not do so, stepping outside the boundary incurs a pāyattika. If returning immediately after a short time, staying outside the boundary for two nights is permitted; on the third night before the dawn light appears, one should either personally arrive in the room or send a messenger to inform the functionary; if not, when dawn breaks one incurs a pāyattika.
