Precept 40: Soliciting delicious food. Four conditions: first, it is delicious food (milk, curd, fish, meat); second, one is not sick (capable of finishing a meal in a single sitting); third, it is for oneself; fourth, eating and swallowing incurs the offense. In the Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya: One must not solicit meat broth from a butcher's house; for the eight kinds, one also must not [solicit] from the house of [makers of] milk and curd, for fear of incurring blame and reproach. Soliciting silk floss from a silkworm-raising house is also the same as this. The Five Hundred Questions: When not sick, soliciting fine food incurs a grave offense. Non-offenses in the Vinaya: A sick person soliciting for oneself; soliciting for a sick person; or mutually soliciting for oneself and others; or obtaining it without asking—all are permissible.
