Precept Seventy-three: Preemptively feigning ignorance out of fear of censure. Four conditions: first, during the extensive recitation of the precepts; second, being in the assembly; third, having the intention not to listen; fourth, when the recitation has passed the five classes, saying, 'I only just heard it,' which concludes the offense. The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: "Not listening to each individual precept along the way is a duṣkṛta; not listening to all of them is a pāyattika. After receiving the full precepts, one should recite the Vinaya of both sections; if incapable, recite one section. If still incapable, one should recite the precepts of the five assemblies (that is, the five classes); four, three, or two assemblies are as in the first phrase; if incapable of reciting two assemblies, one should recite one assembly and the verses. At the time of the upoṣadha, one recites extensively the five assemblies, down to four, three, or two; if not, one recites one assembly and the verses. The remaining bhikṣus may not sit in meditation or engage in other activities, but must listen single-mindedly."
