First, regarding the penitent's deportment: he first removes his fresh, clean surplus robes, puts on an antarvāsas and other coarse garments, wears an uttarāsaṅga over them, bares his right shoulder, takes off his leather sandals, joins his palms, bows his body, lowers his head, and comes into the midst of the Saṃgha. He laments to himself that these offenses have brought him near to grave consequences. As the treatise stated above: with a saṃghāvaśeṣa, the throat remains, not yet dead, relying on the Tathāgata's condescending compassion to institute this method of repentance. Furthermore, I rejoice that I have aroused a fearful mind in advance and have been able to give rise to shame and remorse; one who does not know this repentance would vainly suffer in hell for fifty billion and sixty thousand years. Taking such conditions as the skillful means of grief and joy, he deeply laments and reproaches himself, feeling ashamed that the accumulation of his offenses has defiled the pure assembly. Having thus spurred his mind, he bows at the feet of the Saṃgha on all four sides. Coming before the officiant of the karman, kneeling on his right knee with palms joined, he may either recite the request himself, or another person may prompt him (although there are many offenders, they do not exceed three or five; here, the commonly committed offenses are taken as the model): “May the venerable Saṃgha listen! I, the bhikṣu so-and-so, have committed the three saṃghāvaśeṣa offenses of intentional emission, physical contact, and coarse speech, without recalling the count of each (if he recalls, he should state it), and concealed them for one night up to one hundred nights (the duration between may be long or short, from few to many, stated according to the occasion). Now I request from the Saṃgha the karman for one hundred nights of concealment. May the Saṃgha grant me the karman for one hundred nights of concealment out of compassion!” He requests three times.
