The Vinaya states: A bhikṣu observing the six nights also practices together with the rules for parivāsa for concealment; the only differences are that he must constantly lodge among the Saṃgha and announce it daily (this does not mean lodging in the same room with the Saṃgha). The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: Because of repeatedly committing saṃghāvaśeṣas, repenting them as pāyattikas down to vinayātikrama [offenses], the repentance of six nights was therefore instituted, with rehabilitation among twenty persons. Between these two practices above: if concealed, one is granted the former procedure; if unconcealed, one is granted the latter procedure; both equally effect mānatva rehabilitation. If one re-offends during either of the two procedures, both procedures are individually ruined, and one must be penalized anew with the original [full] period. The rest is as described elsewhere.
