Fourth, explaining the characteristics of the precepts. Speaking of characteristics, wherever there is an object, that is it; the conditions are continuous, and collecting the mind is broadly diffuse. Now, based on the Prātimokṣa, which everyone recites and maintains, the textual characteristics are easy to understand, and observance and transgression are not confused. As for the rest of the myriad objects, how could they all be mentioned? By relying on analogous transmission, one can gain a slight grasp of the outline.
