Fifth, declaring pure. After performing the verbal procedure for a seven-day medicine, because one has a partial attachment to it as one's own, one must declare it pure in order to keep it: first, the substance of the medicine is valuable, so greed and hoarding are frequent; second, it lasts for a long time without undergoing change; third, its flavour and potency are exceptional, strengthening the body. It is ruled that it must be declared pure so as to abandon attachment! For seven-day medicine received only by hand, the duration is brief and faults are rare, so it also does not need to be declared pure. The other three medicines lack these conditions in reverse, and therefore do not need to be declared pure. The purification method is generally identical to that for robes, differing only regarding extra medicine.
