Eighth, miscellaneous clarifications on the various marks. The *Sarvāstivāda[-vinaya-vibhāṣā]* says: If a sick bhikṣu requires seven-day medicine, has no kappiyakāraka himself, and finds it difficult to seek or hire one, he should himself accept it by hand from a kappiyakāraka and, having accepted it verbally from a bhikṣu, place it in one spot and take and eat it himself within seven days. If, after performing the verbal formula, from one day up to five days, a kappiyakāraka comes and touches it, or he further mixes in other unreceived medicines, he should repeat both the hand acceptance and the verbal acceptance, and again obtain [permission to] take it for seven days. If it has reached six days or more, and a kappiyakāraka touches it or other medicine is mixed in, neither [acceptance] may be repeated. If the medicines are numerous and he does not know which is the original medicine, he should once more receive it by hand and receive it verbally, and only then take it. If his illness is grave and he cannot receive it verbally, he may also simply take it directly. Supposing a bhikṣu nursing the sick receives it by hand and receives it verbally, this also constitutes the procedure of receipt; he must pronounce the sick bhikṣu's name and receive it.
