The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: When a bhikṣu builds a room, if he wishes to plaster the walls himself and paint them with the five colors, all are permitted. Except for images of men and women in sexual union, other depictions of mountains, forests, humans, and horses are all permitted. The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya states: They may not be used either; brocades and adornments are not permitted, but the use of other multicolored patterns of birds and beasts is permitted. Ānanda obtained a separate room, and accepting it was permitted. If one builds a private room on saṃgha land, when a visiting monk arrives one must vacate it; if one does not vacate, it reverts to the saṃgha (as saṃgha land cannot be appropriated into private ownership). Those who construct buildings must not complete them in haste, as they would not be solid; if building a large multi-story hall, twelve years of construction are permitted; for the rest, measure appropriately according to size. If a construction-managing bhikṣu completes a room that is adorned, scented with incense, and fully equipped with necessities, he is granted the room to live in; every ninety days he must relocate, and he may not receive other rooms. If there is a layperson who can repair a damaged room, it is given to him by a jñaptidvitīya-karman. The Pañcavargika-vinaya states: On all rooms, inscribe 'The room of donor So-and-so.' The Daśādhyāya-vinaya states: If one donates a room to the monks' saṃgha and then transfers it to the nuns, this is an illegitimate gift, an illegitimate receipt, and an illegitimate use; if one donates to the nuns and transfers it to the monks, it is likewise. If rooms, dwellings, and bedding have a donor, they may only be looked after; one must not take away from one to give to another. For repairing a damaged room, one is granted residence for six years; for constructing a new room, twelve years of residence are granted. The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: When a room belonging to the saṃgha has been in disrepair and one alters its doors and windows, residence is granted by karman for two or three years according to the amount of labor. If an empty room is unfit for living in and one manages its repair, he should be granted residence for one season. If beds, tables, pillows, and mattresses are greasy, dirty, and torn, and one re-dyes, washes, and patches them, he also receives residence for one season.
