The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya says: Not chewing a tooth-stick has five faults: foul breath, inability to distinguish flavors well, indigestion due to heat accumulation, lack of appetite, and dimness of eyes. The Pañcavargika Vinaya says: Having chewed it, one should wash it cleanly and discard it, so that insects will not eat it and die. The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya says: Three matters should be in a concealed place: defecation, urination, and chewing a tooth-stick. Walking meditation has five benefits: being capable of long journeys, being able to contemplate, having few illnesses, digesting food and drink, and sustaining samādhi for a long time. The Daśādhyāya-vinaya says: When practicing walking meditation, one should walk straight, neither slowly nor hastily; one draws a mark on the ground, and there are also walking meditation halls and upper chambers. The *Three Thousand [Rules of Demeanor]* says: There are five places for walking meditation: first, in a quiet place; second, before a door; third, before a lecture hall; fourth, under a stupa; and fifth, under an upper chamber.
