In the next section, "Method of Announcement": based on the aforementioned Mahīśāsaka-vinaya, first announce the number of persons. From "Above and below…" onward, it next explains the purpose. The ruler, parents, teachers and monks, and dānapatis are the four debts of gratitude. Where the mind relies on form, it is termed "conscious beings," collectively encompassing the sentient beings of the six destinies. Each reciting the verse signifies purity of conduct. "In the sūtra": although the term "sūtra" is general, if chanting now, one should say "in the vinaya." In the Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya: because Devadatta split the Sangha and recited the precepts himself, the Tathāgata heard of this and thereupon spoke this verse, telling Ānanda, "The improper assembly has already performed the poṣadha; let those according to Dharma perform the poṣadha on their own." The first half-verse explains what the Buddha instituted: the first line is one's own practice, and the second line is the communal procedure. The second half-verse reveals that one accords with the teaching. "Ought" (應) means "should"; or it may be read in the departing tone.
