問中。一時四月，約過是同，而不盡制，故須問釋以彰教旨。答有二意，初約開後答。唯被前安居人。身為苦器，飢渴寒熱，隨時所須，故號待形。準通五利，且舉外資，是正開意，故但云衣服也。次約開前答。則攝中後二位。教太急者，攝機不盡也。用難常者，機緩不及也；異緣或阻，不可期故。

In the question: One season is four months; with regard to the fault it is the same, yet the prohibition is not applied throughout; therefore, a question and explanation are necessary to illuminate the purpose of the teaching. The answer has two senses: first, answering by reference to granting permission for the latter period. It covers only those in the earlier retreat. Because the body is a vessel of suffering, and hunger, thirst, cold, and heat require what is needed according to the season, it is called 'caring for the physical body.' Corresponding generally to the five benefits, it temporarily adduces external requisites, which is the main intention behind the exception; hence it only mentions clothing. Next, answering by reference to granting permission for the earlier period: this encompasses the two positions of middle and later. If the teaching were too strict, it would fail to encompass all capacities. If the application were difficult to sustain constantly, slower capacities would not keep up; for diverse conditions might cause hindrance, and they cannot be anticipated.
