The next section. Saying 'originally established' clarifies that there was already a boundary previously. Saying 'the Buddha's regulation' means that for a bhikṣu's dwelling place, the Buddha's regulation mandates that one must first establish a boundary; that the regulation requires relying on a boundary is clear. If a monastery has conditions and has not yet had time to establish a boundary, or if relying on a village house or similar places, one may rely on a natural [boundary]. If the monastic quarters have a boundary, one definitively must rely on the boundary. Contemporary practitioners, in places where there is a boundary, instruct people to establish it relying on the monastery; then, since other platforms are small, going back and forth poses no obstacle. Their intention is that relying on the monastery or relying on the boundary is according to what the person desires, and conversely they claim this text accords with the ancient meaning. (From before up to this point, this meaning has appeared in three places, all designated as ancient—this is an extreme error!) Later students, lacking knowledge, all follow these blind guides; how can this be remedied? Saying 'retreating and shrinking' means abandoning the broad monastery and following the narrow boundary, because it captures the intent of the teaching. Below, pointing to the detailed [explanation] means: the Commentary clarifies that where there was originally no boundary, one establishes it relying on the monastery; later it states: 'A practitioner who establishes the resolve protects their practice by adhering to what is urgent; if performing the transaction later is far from the natural [boundary], one only relies on the limits of the natural [boundary]; since there are no difficulties from conditions, it cannot be permitted later; if a narrow [boundary] was established and originally existed, it is said to rely on the new' (another explanation). The intention is that observing the retreat is definitively determined according to the original natural [boundary]; since originally performing the transaction had its purpose in karmavācanā, observing the retreat is done anywhere, without needing an additional establishment. (Ancient records, seeing this, claimed that in places where there was already a boundary beforehand, one also does not need to rely on the boundary; they were mistaken.)
