釋名敘意，文自詳委；行法通塞，須略示之。謂人該五眾，法別三階，時局夏竟，處通二界；餘在文中。言宗要者，若論眾同之本，攝僧大教；此同說戒，即法為要；若治惡挫慢，清心增善，眾行中最，即行為要；若律論廣博，眾說繁累；撮錄時用，以成此篇，即文為要。三釋俱通，後義尤善。

The explanation of the name and narration of the purpose are fully detailed in the text; the permissions and restrictions of the practice must be briefly indicated. Namely, the persons encompass the five assemblies; the methods are distinguished into three stages; the time is restricted to the end of the summer; the place applies across both boundaries; the rest is in the text. Regarding the 'essential principles': if discussing the basis of concord among the assembly, the great teaching that gathers the Saṅgha—this is identical to the poṣadha, so the method is the essential; if suppressing evil and humbling pride, purifying the mind and increasing good, it is foremost among all practices, so practice is the essential; if the vinayas and treatises are extensive and the various expositions are voluminous, and one summarizes what is applicable for the occasion to compose this chapter, then the text is the essential. All three explanations are valid, but the last meaning is especially good.
