In [the section on] distributing grass, the first heading has four parts: first, showing the source, as explained earlier. From 'should' below, second, ordering preparation in advance. 'A cut per person' intends for each to spread their own, fearing they would be spread continuously; one should use a handful, about two spans long, bundled after cutting; it must be spread out enough to accommodate one seat, which serves as the standard. From 'reaching' below, third, clarifying the order of distribution. The senior monk receives it kneeling; the others do not need to. From 'each' below, fourth, clarifying the spreading. 'In front of the seat' refers to the ground outside the mat where one sits. In the interlinear note: some say it is an earnest exhortation to seek it in advance. Others say: 'It is definitely seeking it in advance; why must it be an earnest exhortation?' Now I say that this text is a note on spreading the grass above; meaning that if one only begins to spread it after the five virtues make the announcement, the matter would be hurried and the assembly delayed; therefore, it orders that having received it, one spreads it beforehand, waiting for the announcement to sit down immediately; for those who do not follow this, it is specially noted to show them; 'prepared' (bian) means spreading the grass and preparing the sitting place.
