九問。答中。律因前後安居人雜住，不知隨何自恣；白佛。初令隨上座，上座中又有前後。（主客各有上座。）次令隨舊住，復有前後。令隨多者，如文所引。

Under the ninth question: in the answer, in the Vinaya, because persons of the former and later rains retreats dwelt together and did not know whom to follow for pavāraṇā, they reported it to the Buddha. First, he ordered them to follow the senior seat; among the senior seats there were again former and later retreats. (Hosts and guests each have their senior seat.) Next, he ordered them to follow the long-term residents; again there were former and later retreats. He then ordered them to follow the majority, as cited in the text.
