In listing the chapters: 'Setting Forth the Tenet and Exhorting Study' is restricted in text to the upper fascicle, but its meaning covers the entire work. The following eleven chapters directly explain the communal practices. However, to accomplish and carry out Sangha transactions, four conditions are indispensable: person, dharma, matter, and place—not one can be missing. Now these various chapters are listed according to them. Chapters two, three, and four are the persons capable of conducting [the transaction]; chapter five is the dharma to be conducted; chapter six is the place where the dharma is conducted. The six chapters following are the matters to be affected. Matters are further threefold: chapters seven, eight, and nine are matters concerning sentient beings. Chapters ten and twelve are matters concerning insentient things. The single chapter on Rains Retreat concerns matters combining both (because persons rely on places; yet regarding the assignment of rooms and requesting days within the chapter, both are purely insentient things).
