Regarding the verse text in the Candrapradīpa-sūtra: it does not appear in that sūtra, and the reason is not yet clear. The upper half of the verse explains that the worldly is valued while the Path is degraded. "Form" refers to outward appearance, and "clan" refers to noble family. "Much learning" refers to sufficiency of study. Without precepts, there is no wisdom; animals lack both of these, so they are adduced for comparison. The lower half explains that the worldly is disdained while the Path is valued, reversing the two lines above. "Lowly" refers to an ugly appearance, and "inferior" refers to a base family. Being exalted among humans, he is called a superior person. Because form and clan are worldly, delusive dharmas, while precepts and wisdom are the supramundane, true Path, they are not of the same order.
