The five dharmas of the Samantapāsādikā are mutually interrelated: first, complying with and receiving the teaching; second, purifying the saṅgha to form a community; third, transmitting and receiving without interruption; fourth, bodily and verbal actions being pure; fifth, upholding and maintaining for a long time. The reason it relies solely on five persons is that they can carry out community actions such as receiving precepts. The reason it refers to five thousand years is that the treatise asks: “After a thousand years, is the Buddha's Dharma completely extinguished?” The answer is: “It is not completely extinguished. Within a thousand years, one attains the three kinds of knowledge (penetrating the three times); in another thousand years, one attains arhatship with desires exhausted, without the three kinds of knowledge; in another thousand years, one attains anāgāmin; in another thousand years, one attains sakṛdāgāmin; in another thousand years, one attains srotāpanna. Practicing the Dharma for five thousand years, one attains the path; in the subsequent five thousand years, one practices but does not attain the path. After ten thousand years, scriptures, texts, and characters will be completely extinguished, and there will only appear shaved heads and kāṣāyas.”
