Next, revealing expositions and rebuking scholarly interpretations, the first section also has two parts: first, down to 'prolix and uncontrolled', it directly narrates clinging to the texts. The upper two lines mark the clinging, and the lower two lines reveal the fault. 'Former cultivators' refers to the various masters of previous dynasties. 'Vinaya Piṭaka' tentatively refers to the single section of our own school. Whenever there was a transaction, they would always rely on explicit texts. Although these were authentic records, yet because the ages were remote, the five masters gathered and selected them, translations missed the intended meanings, and transcriptions had errors and omissions, there came to be incomplete and unclear texts. Our school, however, uses the meaning of the text to resolve and harmonize them, as stated below regarding 'the Vinaya text being incomplete'. 'Attaching to conditions' is like appending to affairs. 'Truly' glosses 'actually'. Clinging to the text to the detriment of affairs resulted in prolixity and excess. (Such as sending five virtuous persons separately according to the Vinaya for each karman, not permitting the confession of grave offenses if concealed, dissolving boundaries at the end of the rains retreat, twenty-eight people not meeting the quorum, four people for forfeiture-pāyattika, and the like.) From 'furthermore' downward, it next explains the concurrent arising of delusional calculations; the first line marks the source of error and excess. Study consists of two things: first, one must savor and scrutinize meticulously; second, one must be broadly learned and widely experienced. Since they violated both of these, they had many empty errors. The three lines from 'breast' downward present the marks of their faults. 'Breast' means one's own chest and mind, indicating their acting arbitrarily. 'Especially' glosses 'exceedingly'. (Such as holding robes and medicines in hand, or grasping bedding as a mattress-crosser, and the like.)
