In the text of the answer, the first section: the upper phrase states the ancient view. They held that sixty-three paces is measured only according to the four cardinal directions—east, west, south, and north—not according to the four intermediate points, and thus decided on a square. From "now" onwards, refuting the error: in secular calculation methods, a square is five and the diagonal is seven; taking the natural boundary of the delimitation, the four directions are sixty-three paces, while the four intermediate directions would have a surplus of twenty-odd paces; deep protection can be known accordingly. The cardinal directions are based on the Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya, whereas the intermediate directions have no basis; hence this refutes it.
