Regarding the 'three expulsions': a bhikṣu commits an offense, and stubbornly says he does not see it, or refuses to confess, or says that sexual desire does not obstruct the Path, which is called not relinquishing an evil heresy. These three are all subjected to the jñapticaturthā karmavācanā to be expelled and cast outside the assembly, like an object rendered useless; hence they are called the 'three expulsions.' The lower sentence points to the broader treatment; consulting it, this will become clear of itself.
