1.311

本宗四人，初列名相。如〈僧網〉中。應下，明成法。以所犯情過非極重故。但下，示少缺。由是犯過白四治罰故。不得訶者以三十五事中所制故，律中科為得滿不得訶人。餘如下科。

Regarding the four persons of our own school, the names and characteristics are first listed, as in the 'Monastic Regulations' chapter. The passage beginning 'Should...' explains the validity of the rite, because the intentional fault committed is not extremely grave. The passage beginning 'Only...' indicates a partial deficiency: it is due to having committed a fault and being subjected to the punishment of a jñapticatustha karmavācanā. That they may not protest is because it is prohibited among the thirty-five matters; in the Vinaya, they are classified under the heading of persons who make up the quorum but may not protest.
