Under dividing the chapters and narrating the intent, first it explains the difficulty of determining them. A person is the agent of practice, and the matter is what is performed; hence it is called "objective matters". "Subdividing" means dividing into sections; "planning" means measuring. From "Now..." downward, it properly divides them. Regarding "classes of items", I shall first indicate examples: such as assigning rooms in "Rainy Season Retreat"; clarifying the essence of the precepts in "Explaining the Marks"; clarifying both phenomenal and ultimate confession in "Confessing the Six Classes of Offenses"; dividing the property of the deceased in "Two Robes"; clarifying the ritual of expounding the Dharma in "Guiding Laypeople"; the actions of leaving the household in "Novices"; and the supplementary methods appended to seven of the chapters. If judged by chapter titles, these are not truly subsumed by them; yet assigning rooms during the retreat belongs to the category of retreat, so only 'Rainy Season Retreat' is headlined, and the rest are naturally included. All others follow this analogy. Thus, the thirty chapter headings are all based on the primary subject of each chapter. If so, why are some annotated with 'appendices' while others are not? Answer: because there are degrees of closeness and distance.
