In speaking for oneself: First, it shows the method. It is the same as the previous text on conferring chanda, differing only in the first sentence. Young students nowadays do not know the difference between the saṅgha and individuals, and often say within the assembly, 'Venerable, consider with single mind,' or say, 'Venerable, remember'; being foolish and confused about the Dharma, the ritual transaction will hardly be valid. From 'Four-Part...' onward indicates where it comes from. This is practicing the transactions of another school; citing the circumstance makes it comprehensible. That text merely says: 'I, So-and-so, am pure; may the saṅgha remember and hold it'; we do not use those phrases now. 'Those who do well' praises their ability. 'In accordance with the Dharma' resolves their doubts. 'Those who do not receive incur an offense': that text says a vinayātikrama. It explains five methods in general: the first two are conferred in private, and the latter three are before the assembly. Furthermore, the first three properly come from our own school, while the latter two concurrently practice other schools. Therefore, the Annotated Karmavācanā only lists three methods, clearly indicating that the latter two are adapted according to the former.
