Under exclusively face-to-face: first, indicating the meaning of the name. From "in total" downward, listing the marks of the transactions. "Relying on various schools" means the statement covers both our own school and different schools; the earlier receptions, relinquishments, and so forth all derive from different schools; the remainder mostly belong to our own school. They are listed promiscuously in the text; now they are constrained into five: The legal transactions concerning internal and external requisites total twelve (the previous eight receptions and relinquishments, plus the three purifications, together with receiving medicine); the legal transactions for repenting offenses total six (the four deśanās from pāyattika downward, and the two disclosures); the legal transactions for announcements total six (the four announcements from saṃghāvaśeṣa downward, and the two announcements for nuns); the legal transactions of prohibition are two (niśraya and varṣā); miscellaneous exceptions are five (relinquishing an invitation, relinquishing the precepts, the seven-day period, giving consent, and surplus food). The above total thirty-one transactions; the reason it says twenty-nine is that the last two belong to nuns. The reason they are listed is that they are performed before the saṃgha of monks; the reason they are outside the count is that they are restricted to the nun community. As for discussing them in brief, it is to indicate that it is not exhaustive. Here we must discriminate discrepancies with the commentary: First, the enumeration is different: that text says twenty-eight, combining the announcement of saṃghāvaśeṣa into the announcement of probation, because both are announcements of probation. (Based on practicing concealing, there are various kinds of announcements; they are comprehensively subsumed under the announcement of probation, as can be seen by consulting the "Chapter on Repentance.") Second, the division of grades differs: that text clarifies nine grades, separating the middle thullaccaya alone into the middle-superior grade, because it definitely requires three persons of a small saṃgha before whom to inquire. Third, separation and combination differ: here the thirty [niḥsargika-pāyattika] and the ninety [pāyattika] are together under exclusively face-to-face, whereas there it separates the thirty into saṃgha face-to-face transactions.
