Under 'The Nuns' Boundary': first clarifying the standard measure. 'One krośa' is based on the previously discussed 'travelling on the road'; the Sarvāstivāda Vinaya Vibhāṣā definitively takes a krośa as two li, while the note in the Bhikṣuṇī Manual says it is inferred to be five li. The character 'five' must be an error, because the Saṃyuktaratnapiṭaka-sūtra gives five li. The Commentary says: 'Because of fear that [greater] distance and ruggedness would easily invite abuse and insult.' From 'If...' onward, secondly clarifying the allowance for difficult circumstances: it is then identical to that of the monks. That was due to perils from kings, bandits, and the like, so wide demarcation was allowed; so that they could flee and avoid [peril] at will without leaving the boundary.
