In the Dharmaguptaka: if judged by the origin story, it was merely due to dispute; the text clearly mentions four matters, which fundamentally belong to prohibitive rules. In the general list, the first two sentences identify and delimit [the scope]. It must be done facing the monastic assembly; moreover, it may be merely spoken with the mouth and not necessarily carried out with the body, hence this punishment is imposed. In "meaning...", it lists and shows them. Precepts, view, deportment, and livelihood are the grand guidelines of the Buddha-dharma and essential tasks of cultivation; all four are termed "right" and are free of deviation; right precepts are the foundation for entering the Way, right view is the wisdom that cuts off bonds, right deportment is the outward mark that attracts beings, and right livelihood is the condition for realizing the Way. Now all of these are inverted, bewildering the minds of the times; assessing their feelings based on their offenses, harsh punishments should properly be imposed. First, it causes the offender to reform their conduct; second, it makes the external teaching pure and upright; the Buddha's intention in establishing the teachings is made plain here. The two matters of precepts and deportment are assigned among the seven categories [of offenses], discussed distinctively based on coarse and fine; if explained generally, all seven are termed precepts and all are collectively termed deportment. As for the sixty-two views, calculating according to the five aggregates and generating views for each aggregate, there are four propositions: first, form is the self; second, the self is separate from form; third, the self is large and form is small, with form inside the self; fourth, form is large and the self is small, with the self inside form. The other four [aggregates] follow this pattern: four propositions per aggregate, four times five is twenty; applying them across the three periods of time makes sixty; adding annihilationism and eternalism makes sixty-two. "Evil intent" means acting solely to seek profit, resulting in endless transformations in body and speech; considering what one delights in doing, how could there be only four or five?
