Regarding the five kinds in the Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya: in the first, the first two sentences are a general heading. The text from "body" downwards gives a separate explanation in two parts; the former explains men. The three kinds of separation and association can be known by examining the text. The text from "further" downwards next applies it to nuns and women. It only clarifies bodily familiarity, briefly pointing out sitting together; the text from "the rest" downwards points to the aforementioned sleeping together, sharing utensils, and so on; in estimation there are also three, which can be understood by analogy to the above. The character luǒ (蓏) is pronounced láng-guǒ; it means the fruit of plants. In the second, "the five groups" refers to the five sections, temporarily citing the full number; according to the curtailment of practices, it only clarifies the lower four; if one violates the first section, one does not enter this disciplinary treatment. In the third there are three distinctions: the first refers to leaving and entering at improper times. The text from "with" downwards is the second, referring to associating intimately with the unwholesome. "Thieves" refers to secret pilferers. Chūpú (摴蒲) means gambling games. The text from "going and residing" downwards is the third, namely frequenting improper places. In the fourth, because of a fondness for disputes and litigation, five faults further arise: the upper two are mental faults, the middle two are verbal faults, and the fifth is a bodily fault. "This nature" refers precisely to disputation and litigation. The fifth is reversing respect. In recent times it is mostly like this; those of discernment should be warned. The text from "as above" downwards concludes the faults and clarifies disciplinary treatment.
