In [the section on] the sixth, suspension for not making deśanā: This was also due to Channa. The Saṃgha asked, 'You have an offense, make deśanā.' He replied, 'I will not make deśanā.' Therefore, suspension was instituted for him. In explaining the fault, it first explains that one ought to make deśanā. The upper sentence indicates that offenses can be confessed: light ones are immediately eliminated, and heavy ones become light; thus they are said to be 'indeterminate.' 'Arising from conditions' explains the reason why they are indeterminate. 'Yet...' below explains the refusal to make deśanā; the upper four sentences show the fault. The phrase 'speaking corruptly' means leaning upon sacred words, deceiving the ignorant, and defying the Saṃgha's commands. The two sentences beginning with 'Defilement...' display the gravity of the harm. The two sentences beginning with 'Therefore...' explain the disciplinary procedure. The phrasing is identical to the previous, merely substituting the character for 'confess' (chan) wherever 'see' (jian) occurs, with no other difference. 'The sūtra...' below reconciles the variant names, which refers to the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra.
