In [the section on] the seventh, evil views: The Buddha was in Śrāvastī. An evil view arose in the bhikṣu Ariṣṭa, who said: 'I understand the Dharma taught by the Buddha: engaging in sensual lust is not an obstructive dharma to the Path.' The bhikṣus earnestly admonished him, but Ariṣṭa clung firmly to his evil view and said: 'This is true; all else is false.' The bhikṣus reported this to the Buddha, who instituted the rule on this account. In explaining the fault, it first clarifies the root fault and immediately demonstrates the name based on it. 'Also...' below explains other faults. 'Must...' below introduces the disciplinary procedure. The motion states: 'May the venerable Saṃgha listen! This bhikṣu Ariṣṭa has spoken such words: "Engaging in sensual lust is not an obstructive dharma to the Path." If the time has arrived for the Saṃgha, may the Saṃgha give consent for the Saṃgha to now carry out an admonition for the bhikṣu Ariṣṭa so that he may relinquish this matter: "Ariṣṭa, do not speak such words! Do not slander the World-Honoured One! Slandering the World-Honoured One is not wholesome; the World-Honoured One does not speak such words. The World-Honoured One, through countless skillful means, taught that engaging in sensual lust is an obstructive dharma to the Path; if one commits sensual lust, it indeed obstructs the Path." Such is the motion.' (In the karmavācanā, after stating the second sentence as before, one further continues with the fourth sentence; then the condition and the root are stated together, which differs from the motion; all preceding procedures are like this.)
