In [the section on] the discipline of the vicious horse, first, the causal background is shown. "Not asking" means not relying on his own confession. From "speaking" onward, the formal discipline has three parts: first, showing that other places will not tolerate [him]. From "as" onward, the second clarifies his being cast out by the present Saṃgha. He (合) means "together" (和). The stake (杙) is the post for tying a horse. The above presents the simile. From "you" onward, the simile is matched to the Dharma. "Not seeing the offense" matches the vicious horse above that is hard to tame; "renouncing everything" matches the casting away above together with the stake. From "in this way" onward, the third clarifies the expelling after the discipline. "Not seeking permission" is because, owing to his violent wickedness, he would certainly not grant permission; "this is itself permission" means he silently accepts the Saṃgha's reproof, having nothing to say in defense.
