In distinguishing differences, the Sarvāstivāda Vinaya Vibhāṣā says: "Not taking his own confession" is because the community all thoroughly knows [the facts]; "not being present in person" allows it to be applied from a distance. From "if" onward, the treatise is resolved according to the Vinaya. From "as" onward, instances are pointed out. [The section on] making up the quorum has already cited this. This is also known by the great assembly, and the Buddha also admonished and stopped it, ordering that his own confession be taken; thus we know it is not permitted. Furthermore, as for not being present, the Vinaya also does not allow an exception; the five factors being present in person applies across all karmavācanās. However, that the treatise allows it is perhaps because he was violent and wicked, and the assembly could not restrain him; that which comes from the sacred treatises is certainly not in vain.
