In answering about inexhaustibility, the first four sentences turn back to reproach the improper question. "Trifling" (瑣) means small. From "now" (夫) onward, it directly points out the field of merit. The "four classes" refer to devas, humans, nāgas, and ghosts, who are the donors capable of giving; the Triratna is the object of giving. From "like" onward, four things are briefly cited to illustrate inexhaustibility: the growth of heaven and earth illustrates the offerings of the four classes continuing without break; the utility of mountains and seas illustrates the Triratna's field of merit, receiving and disbursing without limit.
