簡人中，初標示。須下六句，列示五德。初行潔，二志堅，三學廣（中間二句），四識高，五智深。可下二句，示堪能。今時昏鄙，無有一德，輒居僧首；群愚共聚，造作非法；但謀利養，餘無所知。悲夫！

Under "Selecting Persons", it first indicates [the matter]. The six sentences starting with "Must..." list and show the five virtues: first, purity of conduct; second, firmness of resolve; third, breadth of learning (the middle two sentences); fourth, high discernment; fifth, deep wisdom. The two sentences starting with "Can..." show competence. Nowadays, people are benighted and base, lacking a single virtue, yet abruptly occupy the position of head of the saṅgha; crowds of fools gather together to perform unlawful acts, scheming only for material gain and knowing nothing else. How lamentable!
