請和尚中。初言根本者，戒從彼生故。承習謂稟學，示導謂軌行，生長謂成德；不附嚴師，此三俱喪。

In requesting the upādhyāya: first, stating "root" is because the precepts arise from him. "Receiving and practicing" means receiving instruction; "showing and guiding" means deportment and action; "giving birth and nurturing" means accomplishing virtue; without attaching oneself to a strict master, all three of these are lost.
