Under "Recounting the division of schools," the first text. The statement "comprehensively clarifying" means summarily embracing the various schools. After the Tathāgata's parinirvāṇa, Kāśyapa compiled the Eighty-Recitation Vinaya; the five masters succeeded one another for a hundred-odd years without any branch divisions. Later, due to contentious views, it eventually split into five schools. Since the stream originated from a single source, the branches must return to a single root; hence it says "truly a single text." From "but" onward shows the reasons for the division. The preceding line clarifies that the Tathāgata set forth teachings unequally to meet capacities (those who attribute the capacity for awakening to the five masters are incorrect); the following line clarifies that the attachments of the various masters differed. "Standing like peaks" is a metaphor for their attachments being as solid as mountains. The preface to the Annotated Precepts says: "Like clouds flying, there are the differences of the two divisions and the five divisions; like mountains spreading, there are the distinctions of the eighteen and the five hundred." (Some say the five sacred peaks correspond to the five divisions; this is incorrect. Moreover, the words "various views" are not limited to the five divisions; please verify this with the Annotated Precepts.)
