In the general selection: first, it encourages choosing senior and virtuous ones. "Shuo" means great. When one's monastic age is high and one's virtue is heavy, with time it becomes all the firmer; hence it says, "they generate good afterward." From "Five Hundred Questions" downwards: the upādhyāya has not reached [the required age]. In the Commentary on the Vinayadvāviṃśatividyā-śāstra, the gradations of the various masters are given: deportment is identical to the above, while the rest are all increased. "Not sharing a bed" applies generally to the nine masters. Citing these two texts, the intention is to favor advanced monastic age. However, they must possess virtue and also be seasoned; if they lack virtue despite many years, how could they be worth choosing? Question: Since fewer and more [years] differ, how does one determine the correct standard? Answer: If following the prescriptive limit, one must follow one's own school. If fortunate to have elders, one should adopt the Vinayadvāviṃśatividyā-śāstra. The intention of the Manual lies here; thus it cites it as a supplementary reference.
