Under "Citing Evidence," the first cites evidence for sentient beings. From "Sarvāstivāda" onward is the second, citing evidence for non-sentient beings. The objects of non-sentient beings are vast; here the specks of earth are briefly cited to demonstrate their manifold marks. From "Namely" onward further cites the four objects to corroborate this. The five kinds in the Sujāta [Sūtra] are explained separately earlier and later. If examined in detail, food, drink, clothing, lodging, bedding, the four kinds of Saṅgha property—permanent and currently present—walking, standing, sitting, lying down, bowing, looking up, and all bodily deportments, defecation, urination, and all daily tasks are nothing that is not a prescribed rule; so it is said: in the dense forest of ten thousand objects, what matter is not a maintenance? If it were not so, how could it be called "complete"? If it is not generated beforehand, whence could practice arise? Therefore one must know that before receiving [the precepts], one must study this thoroughly in advance. The establishment of the novice's rank exists precisely for this; but today people are blind to the teaching, so who understands this anymore?
