Fourth, "destroying the internal and external": In the Vinaya, because a naked ascetic debated with Śāriputra and thought that the Śākyan recluses possessed wisdom and intelligence, he later saw Upananda and went forth under him. When he asked Upananda about doctrinal meanings, the latter could not answer, so he abandoned the path. The bhikṣus reported this to the Buddha, and the Buddha said: "From this day forward, I permit giving non-Buddhists four months of living together with a jñaptidvitīyā karmavācanā; first have him shave his hair and receive the ten precepts, and afterward perform the karma." (This regulation tests non-Buddhists who come for the first time, not those who destroy the internal and external.) Later, another non-Buddhist, after only four months of testing, attained right faith; the Buddha instructed that he be granted the complete precepts at once. When the former naked ascetic heard this, he came back to go forth. The Buddha said: "This person who destroys both internal and external paths brings no growth or benefit in my Dharma"; from then on, he instituted the prohibition against it. What is called "destroying" is because both wrong and right views are corrupted. As the *Commentary* says: "It primarily takes destroying the internal, and also genuinely takes destroying the external"; this is it.
