In the Saṃyuktāgama, it first clarifies the disciple acting in accordance with the Dharma. The first two sentences mean abandoning two faults: flattery and deception are in the mind; lying and deceit are in the mouth. The three sentences from 'faith...' downward mean cultivating the three karmas. Doctrinally, they are divided into five practices: 1. leaving behind delusions and inversions; 2. being free from heedlessness; 3. not being indolent; 4. severing false conditions; 5. distancing oneself from defilements. These correspond in sequence. From 'deeply...' downward, he acts in accordance with instructions. From 'with resolution...' downward, he aspires to the noble path. From 'thus...' downward, it urges the master to regard him with respect and affection (the character 授 [confer] in ancient manuscripts was written as 愛 [cherish/love]).
