Among the conditions: According to the Commentary, there are six, but conditions four and five are divided out of the third. Third, being in the same boat. Fourth, going up or down with the current; the text permits an exception for crossing directly across, so the offense must be determined in terms of travelling up or down; furthermore, it takes merely the intention: as soon as one steps in, the offense is incurred, without waiting for the boat to move. Fifth refers to circumstances not of crossing straight across or of losing passage. Sixth, stepping in with both feet incurs the offense; in the Vinaya, having one foot in the boat and one foot on land is a duṣkṛta. According to the Commentary, travelling with a laywoman also constitutes an offense.
