In citing the various texts: The Mahīśāsaka-vinaya shows the prior deportment. Under "Performing...", it presents the spoken formula. "As above" continues: "Knowing it to be this, seeing it to be this, one performs the leftover-food rite." Under "If altogether...", it indicates an abridged method: one simply takes the other's words; it does not require the food. "Nuns have it in full" comes from the Mahīśāsaka-vinaya; the ancients thought nuns did not have it, hence it is specifically pointed out; furthermore, in [the rule on] frivolous speech, that nuns undergo [the rule of] not performing the leftover-food rite makes it clear that monks and nuns equally possess it. Under "The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya...", it clarifies whether the rite succeeds or fails when the vessels are separate. That text states: If a bhikṣu brings food and wishes to make it leftover food, and performs the leftover rite in a bowl over his alms-bowl, only the food in the bowl is deemed leftover food, not that in the alms-bowl; if broth from the bowl flows into the alms-bowl, both may be deemed leftover food. The present text states the reverse, merely preserving the general sense.
