In guarding purity, in the Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya, first it clarifies passing the time. In the text there are two offenses: the upper is improper time, and the lower is stopping food. If one has not exceeded a muhūrta, one commits only improper time; if one has exceeded a muhūrta, both pāyattikas are charged together. In the note, first it indicates the time limit. Below, from "If", it clarifies improper time. "Two times" means: first, passing noon; second, passing a muhūrta. Below, from "A bhikṣu", it next clarifies purifying the hands, in order to prevent overnight grease. "Rough and coarse" means casual. "Rubbing again after washing" means subsequently touching each other again. Moreover, having previously held substances, there could be impurity, so one must wash again. In the note, based on purifying the hands, touching a towel is decided. Below, two Vinayas are cited to further substantiate the text of the note. The Vinaya ordering food to be contained clearly requires it to be pure. The Daśādhyāya-vinaya's daily washing shows that guarding purity can be known.
