In the seventh: it clarifies that among the assemblies of Chan and doctrinal lectures today, although what they study differs, there are none who have not received the precepts. If originally undertaken for the sake of maintaining them, the grade of precepts is generated. Contrary to this, receiving them in vain certainly results in having no precepts; in that case, by what can one serve as the Sangha jewel? By what can one assimilate the offerings of the faithful? Fruitlessly shaving the head and dying the robes will ultimately lead to falling [into lower realms] due to these offerings. Furthermore, the *Vaipulya* Mahāyāna merely opens the understanding of the mind and is not constrained by physical forms and robes; the householder Vimalakīrti and the spiritual friends in the *Gaṇḍavyūha* transformed beings in accordance with conditions, without relying on outward form and deportment. Now, since one claims to be universally accommodating, why bother shaving and dying [robes]? If one can examine oneself, one should touch one's own head.
