In the second, of the four propositions regarding body and mind, the first proposition: "reception accomplished without mind" means that although one's mind is not exclusively focused on the object of food, mind and object must be distinctly clear; if one is entirely mind-less, reception is not accomplished. In the second proposition, first the characteristic is shown. "Vinaya..." onwards cites the circumstance: because grain was expensive in Vaiśālī, bhikṣus with psychic powers went to foreign countries to beg; those people resented the bhikṣus, and so forth, as cited in the Manual. "If..." onwards shows the difference: a verbal addition is made as explained below. Third: "equal" means receiving with upright mind and upturned hands. The above explains doing so according to Dharma. "If..." onwards eliminates what is not according to Dharma: though body and mind are equal, if it violates the Dharma, it is not accomplished. Fourth: because there was a preliminary preparatory stage, subsequent accomplishment is allowed. Guan 關 means to involve.
