In "Seven: Contemplation on Food": 1. Contemplating the two matters of external food: the upper sentence reflects on the planting and cultivation, the lower sentence ponders the intention of the donor. 2. Contemplating whether one's own practice is complete, abundant, deficient, or diminished. The three below all contemplate one's present mind: 3. The mind free from faults: superior food often brings greed, inferior food often brings anger, medium food often brings delusion; only when free of these three minds may one proceed to eat. 4. The antidotal mind: "proper task" means having no craving thoughts whatsoever, but genuinely intending to treat it just as taking medicine to cure the illness of hunger; that is what the Bequeathed Teaching Sutra means by: "When receiving various foods and drinks, one should regard them as taking medicine." (Some say "proper" eliminates wrong livelihood, or say "task" is one of the four tasks, but neither represents the text's meaning.) 5. The mind of renunciation: the path-undertaking covers the three vehicles and three trainings; worldly retribution refers to humans and devas.
