In the title, the two words 'precept-marks' generally designate the prātimokṣa, which is what is explained; the two words 'sequentially explaining' are restricted to the present *Transactions Manual*, being that which explains. However, in the prātimokṣa, only the names and categories are listed; discerning the fulfillment of maintenance and violation is fully set forth in the extensive Vinaya. Now, returning to extract the Vinaya texts and drawing broadly upon various divisions, under each precept the items are distinctly and thoroughly shown; hence it is called 'sequentially explaining the marks according to the precepts'. Question: Since this is the fundamental *Transactions Manual*, why does it say 'explaining'? Answer: 'Explaining' means that according to each cited precept, it directly reveals the marks of gravity and lightness in maintenance and violation; it is not like the *Precept Commentary*, which takes up the text word by word to explain it. Question: What are the marks? Answer: As in the subsequent explanation of the precepts, three categories bundle them: first, the objective realm of violation; second, the marks of constituting a violation; third, exceptions of non-violation; these collectively constitute the marks. If further sought through principle, there are also three distinctions: first, violation and non-violation; second, the differences of gravity and lightness within violations; third, the distinctions between preparatory stage and principal offense. Comprehensively discussing their marks, they do not go beyond mind and object, as will be further explained below.
