示通別中。此篇逐條顯相，名別事持犯；後章統收篇聚，名總義持犯。由別顯總，以總收別；前後相照，持犯方明。欲令預曉二篇來意，故此示之。指，即示也。直陳者，簡去義章，在後篇故。進謂無過可行，不謂有教制止。方軌持犯，準題文倒。

In indicating the general and the specific: this chapter reveals marks item by item, termed specific-transaction maintenance and violation; the later chapter unifies and gathers together the classes and groups [of offenses], termed general-principle maintenance and violation. The specific illuminates the general, and the general gathers the specific; when the earlier and later reflect each other, maintenance and violation only then become clear. Wishing to make them understand beforehand the rationale for the two chapters' sequence, it is therefore indicated here. "Pointing out" means indicating. "Directly presenting" sets aside the theoretical sections, because they are in the later chapter. "Advancing" means practicing where there is no transgression, and "not" means abstaining where there is an instructive prohibition. Setting out the model for maintenance and violation reverses the order of the phrasing in the title.
