初科。聖道者，通語三乘。本謂根本，基即基址。本喻戒法發生於聖道，基喻聖道依憑於戒法。

The first section. The "Noble Path" speaks generally of the three vehicles. "Root" means fundamental, and "base" means foundation. "Root" is a metaphor for the precept-dharma generating the Noble Path; "base" is a metaphor for the Noble Path relying upon the precept-dharma.
